When considering Cloud Object Storage, most people think of Amazon S3 first. But which provider is the cheapest? Which is fastest? Which one is best for personal files, or are they all meant just for business?
These are the kinds of questions we love at file.rocks, so we’ll keep answering them. But let’s start with that first one — which Cloud Object Storage is cheapest?
TL;DR - Which is cheapest?
The cheapest Cloud Object Storage we’ve seen is Backblaze B2. It costs $6 per TB/month.
The runner up is Wasabi at $6.99 per TB/month. It’s worth noting that Wasabi has a minimum billed storage amount of 1 TB, so the least you’ll be charged is $6.99.
In comparison, Amazon S3 is $23 per TB, and Cloudflare R2 is $15 per TB. That’s a big difference when price is your #1 concern.
What else matters?
It’s worth noting though that price isn’t everything! Each platform has its own pros and cons that are worth understanding before locking in somewhere.
For instance, some providers charge for egress, which is fancy cloud storage jargon that just means transferring files out of their service.
Other cloud storage providers are slower, which means if performance is your #1 concern, it just won’t work for you.
Some also have very confusing pricing structures, where you get charged little fees for every action you take via API. I mean, just look at the Amazon S3 pricing page 🤯
And some platforms just have an obviously worse user experience (hard to find things when navigating around, some things not possible in their dashboard and only available via API, etc.).
The reason we like Backblaze B2 is because they have a fairly good dashboard experience, it’s always hot (meaning faster to get files), and it’s the best price in the business ($6/TB).
